Are Your Skin Care Products Harmful To Your Skin?

Your skin is the body’s largest organ and the first line of defense against harmful substances, toxins, infection, temperature, and dehydration. That is why it is important to keep it healthy, so in turn it can keep you healthy. Your skin not only protects you from the elements, it reflects the state of your health, and whether you like it or not your age.

Skin is an organ, it breathes, and it will absorb 60 % of what we put on it. Think about how nicotine or birth control patches work. The truth about skin care is most skin care products on the market today contain numerous synthetic additives that not only weaken your natural defense systems, but can cause skin irritations, rashes, and allergies.

I had never bothered to read the ingredients list on labels of skin care products, always believing that products that could be harmful would not be allowed to be sold in stores. After doing research, I found that many personal and home care products are a mixture of toxic chemicals, harmful to people and the environment.

Natural skin and body care preparations use simple, plant-based ingredients, rather than synthetics that interfere with the body’s ability to heal. Using the wisdom of nature with pure essential oils as active ingredients provides many healing benefits to skin. Essential oils improve circulation, eliminate toxins, and regenerate the skin. Active plant ingredients are highly dynamic and exhibit therapeutic effects. Plant oils are far superior to petroleum oil, they help to replenish and nourish your skin.

For thousands of years people used natural ingredients to treat a wide range of skin conditions. It has only been in the last hundred years or so that man has used chemistry to alter those ingredients, or even worse, create chemicals that go in their products without fully understanding the shortterm and longterm effects that they might have on our bodies. The reason is often these chemicals are cheaper, offer a longer shelf life, and can be patented.

So why should a person use natural skin care products over synthetic products? And why do so many skin care products use these potentially hazardous ingredients? Parabens, mineral oil, paraffin, petroleum, sodium laurel sulfate, propylene glycol, etc, etc, etc.

Let’s compare the actual difference. In the era of mass production, synthetic raw materials had an advantage, waxes, petroleum products, i.e. Vaseline, mineral oils and synthetic fats have a long shelf life of 3 or more years. Natural products usually have a 1 to 2 year shelf life when using natural preservative systems, and with normal or average use, products should be used up in 3 to 6 months. There are some skin care companies that use natural or organic ingredients, but then continue to use toxic chemicals and fillers to “enhance” the product, with synthetic preservatives, fragrances, and emulsions.

While this may be good for business, is it good for your skin? To answer this question we will simply explain the differences and the effects on the skin of natural ingredients and synthetic ingredients.

A precondition for successful cosmetic treatment is the ability for the product to foster healthy skin. Synthetic substances used in cosmetics today may have a negative or toxic effect on the skin with prolonged use. The body cannot utilize these substances nor can the skin. These ingredients do not participate in any natural or healthy skin process. Natural products aim at maintaining or restoring the natural functions of the skin. Natural products use active plant ingredients that are beneficial to skin regeneration, and are what the body needs to maintain proper balance.

So let’s review, why natural vs. synthetic skin care? Synthetic skin care products and ingredients can be harmful, counterproductive, negative or have toxic effects with prolonged use. Chemicals are harmful to you and the environment, low-end products or ingredients actually have no real benefits. They are not as effective. Strong perfumes, dyes, parabens, sulfates, chemicals and alcohols can irritate your skin and can also be toxic. Using synthetic or artificial ingredients that coat or cover the skin interfere with the skins natural functions.

Natural skin care products and ingredients are eco-friendly, good for us, and sustainable. They contain no chemical enhancers, are more effective, more economical, healthy and cruelty free. Natural skin care products are fresher, and with continued use have healing effects. Natural or organic ingredients are not treated with chemicals, or pesticides.

The reality is, most people simply won’t take the time to research products and understand what ingredients work and what ingredients are actually harmful to your skin. Ironically, it’s usually the most expensive skin care products that are the most ineffective. With all the toxic products out in the marketplace today, Natural and Organic skin care offers a solution for healthy skin. We invite you to read the label and find out for yourself why natural skin care makes more sense for your health and your body
