Can Chickens Eat Bread – What Do You Think?

Can Chickens eat Bread Scraps?

We all get bread scraps set aside for the compost if you have one.

Or else they go in the bin.

But I would not advise that as it is natural, you are better off throwing it out in your garden.

It will soon disappear.

Now when it comes to your backyard chickens and bread.

I have never even thought twice about giving my chickens scraps of bread.

As we know bread is filling and so it is the same for your chickens.

It will fill their bellies, and it is great for those cold winter days when you want to see a content chicken without a grumbling stomach.

Can Chickens eat Bread with Mold

Now…

All bread gets mouldy at one point or the other.

When it comes to keeping your bread for much longer than usual and it almost walks out of your kitchen

This is not a good thing.

As with mouldy bread, there are mould spores.

You see the fluffy looking mould on bread, it is almost like fairy floss.

But not as tasty.

No, I have never tried it…

It might look nice but I just know that that stuff is going to taste.

Well…

Let’s say not nice and leave it at that.

So, these spores can irritate your chickens breathing passages.

That’s one thing, and the other giving your chickens mouldy bread is a bit desperate really…

Don’t you think?

Would you eat it?

If you did you would not be throwing it out.

And neither should your chickens be eating mouldy bread.

Not much can be gained from eating mouldy bread.

So it is ready for the compost heap.

But…

I have sometimes taken off the mouldy parts of the rest of the bread slice is OK and given then that’s OK.

Why is Bread Bad for Chickens

A question that needs to be answered and it is being asked.

And I do not know where such a question would come from.

As it is completely wrong.

Yes, chickens can eat bread, as we do.

So I need to clear this up.

Bread is fine for your chickens.

Never has it been bad for them unless of course, it is turning green from mould.

OK…

Bread might have very little nutritional value compared to other food.

And in large quantities, it could cause blockages or even a sour crop in a chicken.

But this is rare…

With stale bread.

Because it is on the way out.

Don’t go feeding them much of this.

Just because it is not really for you when it is old, does not mean that it is the best for your chickens either.

Can Chickens eat Bread Crusts?

Do you eat bread crusts?

It is only the outside of the bread that gets cooked more than the inside.

So it becomes a little harder and darker in colour.

There is no reason whatsoever that you need to hesitate in giving your backyard chickens crusts.

Even on their own without the inner bread.

If you are the sort that likes to cut the crusts off your bread slices.

Your chickens will have them.

Can Chickens eat Bread and Butter?

There is usually a bit of butter that lingers on the edge of the crusts when thrown away.

And there is no problem with giving your chickens this at all.

But if you are thinking that.

“I think I will give my chickens a slice of bread today, and hey. I think I will put some butter on it for them as well.”

Butter is fine for your chickens, but I would go out of my way in putting butter on the bread for my chickens.

So if the bread that you have decided to throw away and straight into the chicken run is fine.

Just leave it at that…

Can Chickens eat Breadfruit?

Now to your talking…

That breadfruit!

We all love it and that fruit inside of the bread is a special treat.

So your chickens will think so also.

They will go for the breadfruit of fruit bread as you would also call it every time over normal plain bread.

I have seen them.

They see the fruit in the bread.

And you guessed it?

They peck all the fruit out of the bread slices first before they get to eat the bread itself.
